Handshake AI data partnerships: who qualifies, what it pays, and what to check
On this page
The short answer
Handshake AI, the AI arm of the Handshake careers network, pays established companies to license a de-identified copy of their operational data, from email and Slack to QuickBooks, Paychex and ServiceTitan, to frontier AI labs. It wants 20+ full-time employees and 3+ years in operation, and says partnerships range from $100K to $4M+. Handshake says partner companies are never identified, but you stay responsible for making sure the transfer is legal.
It does not publish a payment timeline or exclusivity terms on its pages, so get both in writing before you share anything.

What Handshake and Handshake AI are
Handshake is a careers network for college students and recent graduates, founded in 2014 by Garrett Lord, Ben Christensen and Scott Ringwelski, and based in San Francisco (source: Wikipedia, Handshake).
Handshake AI is the newer business. Launched in 2025, it recruits experts from that network to create training data for AI labs (source: Sacra, Handshake). It grew fast: its AI training business reached a gross annualized run rate of nearly $1 billion in April 2026, up from $550 million in January (source: Dealroom, citing The Information, Apr 14, 2026). That makes it one of the large buyers alongside micro1 and Mercor.
The company-data program grew out of that business. Around April 2026, Handshake launched an employer data program that pays companies directly for real operational data (source: BigGo Finance, Jul 24, 2026), which it now markets as data partnerships under the headline “Your company data may be worth millions” (source: Handshake AI, data partnerships).
How the Handshake AI data partnership program works
Handshake licenses a de-identified copy of your company's working records and delivers it to frontier AI labs for training and evaluation (source: Handshake AI, data partnerships). You keep your systems and your originals. From Handshake's pages, the steps are (source: Handshake AI, data partnerships, Handshake AI, license your data):
- Intake. A short form asks for your name, email, company name, website and country. Handshake says it carries no commitment.
- Scoping. If there is a fit, a scoping call follows. Handshake says you decide exactly what is shared.
- Terms. Price and license terms are agreed after due diligence on the data.
- Preparation and delivery. Handshake de-identifies and formats the data, and the prepared dataset goes to AI labs under contractual confidentiality.
Handshake's team contacts referred companies directly (source: Handshake AI, refer a company), so you may hear about the program from a Handshake representative or from someone referring you. If a message comes through LinkedIn or email, go to Handshake's program page directly rather than clicking the link in the message, and make sure any offer comes from Handshake itself. For the other programs buying the same kind of records, see our directory of companies that buy business data for AI.
What Handshake AI licenses
Handshake lists “examples of sources we buy” and says there are more than a thousand others (source: Handshake AI, license your data):
| Category | Tools Handshake names |
|---|---|
| Email and chat | Gmail, Outlook, Slack |
| Files and docs | Google Drive, Dropbox, Notion |
| Project management | Monday.com |
| Design and engineering | Figma, AutoCAD |
| Accounting and ERP | NetSuite, QuickBooks |
| Payroll | Paychex |
| Field and home services | ServiceTitan |
That list stands out among the large buyers. micro1 and Mercor lead with knowledge work: SOPs, CRM data, GitHub, Confluence. Handshake names QuickBooks, Paychex and ServiceTitan, the systems that run contractors, home services companies and other operating businesses. If your company runs on dispatch, jobs, invoices and payroll rather than wikis and tickets, Handshake is one of the programs that names your stack directly.
Payroll and field service records are also among the most sensitive. A Paychex export holds pay rates and personal details. A ServiceTitan account holds customer names, home addresses and job notes. Expect those fields to be excluded or de-identified, and agree in writing on which ones.
Who qualifies for Handshake AI data partnerships
| Requirement | What Handshake says |
|---|---|
| Headcount | 20+ full-time employees (source: Handshake AI, license your data) |
| Years in business | 3+ years in operation (source: Handshake AI, license your data) |
| Geography | The estimator asks for USA, Canada, Europe or other (source: Handshake AI, data partnerships) |
| Industries | None named or excluded on its program pages (source: Handshake AI, data partnerships, Handshake AI, license your data) |
A 20-person floor is one of the lower published bars among the large buyers. micro1 asks for 30+ employees (source: micro1, data partnerships), and Mercor publishes no minimum at all (source: Mercor, Monetize your data). Nyne uses the same 20 full-time employee and 3 year starting point (source: Nyne, sell company data).
The 3-year requirement matters as much as headcount. Buyers want history: enough years of records to show how work changes over time, how problems get resolved, and how outcomes connect to what the team did.
What Handshake AI advertises paying
Handshake says “Partnerships can range from $100K to $4M+ depending on the data shared” (source: Handshake AI, data partnerships). Its estimator takes three inputs: number of employees, years of operation and country. The example on its page reads:
| Estimator input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Employees | 100 |
| Years in operation | 10 |
| Country | USA |
| Estimated range shown | $383,083 to $896,969 |
Handshake says payouts vary with your data sources, volume and quality, due diligence, and acceptance of licensing terms (source: Handshake AI, license your data). In other words, the estimator sizes you by headcount and age, and the real price is set later by what you can actually license. A company that excludes half its systems will not see the same number as one that shares them all.
To compare Handshake's range with what other programs advertise for a company your size, use our company data value checker. It shows which programs you likely qualify for and each one's advertised range, not a valuation.
How Handshake says your data is handled
According to Handshake's program pages (source: Handshake AI, data partnerships, Handshake AI, license your data):
- All data is scoped, de-identified and kept confidential, and you decide exactly what is shared.
- Transfer and use are covered by your contract, with access limited to authorized teams.
- The prepared dataset goes to frontier AI labs for training and evaluation under contractual confidentiality.
- Partner companies are never identified.
- Handshake says it won't share any information without your consent.
You carry the compliance risk of the transfer
Handshake's page says data partners “remain responsible for ensuring that their transfer to Handshake AI complies with applicable legal requirements” (source: Handshake AI, data partnerships). If your privacy notice, a customer contract, an NDA or a professional rule forbids sharing something, de-identification does not shift that risk to Handshake. Review what you are allowed to license before you decide what to share.
De-identification lowers the risk that a record points back to a person or a client, but it does not remove it. A distinctive job, a small customer base or a recognizable writing style can still identify someone. Agree in writing on what is excluded entirely, whether you can review a sample before delivery, and what happens if something is re-identified.
Handshake data partnerships review: track record and reports
What Handshake reports. Its license page shows “$250M paid out to partners” and “1K+ partner companies” (source: Handshake AI, license your data). These are self-reported. The page does not say what period they cover or whether they include payments to Handshake's contractor network, so treat them as a sign of scale rather than a count of completed data deals.
Contractor pay complaints. In March 2026, Business Insider reported that five contractors on OpenAI projects said Handshake suspended their accounts without warning, that four were not paid for their work, and that one was told there was no appeal process. Handshake declined to comment (source: Business Insider via AOL, Mar 4, 2026). Those reports concern individual contractors, not companies licensing data. The practical lesson for a data partner is to have the payment trigger and a dispute process written into your own contract rather than left to policy.
If you run a law firm or an accounting firm
Handshake does not name law or accounting firms, and any company with 20+ full-time employees and 3+ years can apply (source: Handshake AI, license your data). Because the seller stays responsible for the legality of the transfer, professional firms need to be especially careful about scope.
A law firm cannot license client files, matter content, client communications, work product or privileged material. ABA Model Rule 1.6 bars a lawyer from revealing information relating to a client's representation without informed consent (source: ABA Model Rule 1.6). An accounting firm cannot license client books or anything derived from a tax return, because IRC 7216 makes unconsented disclosure of tax return information by a preparer a crime (source: 26 U.S.C. 7216). That rules out a firm's QuickBooks client files even though Handshake lists QuickBooks as a source.
What can qualify is firm-owned material with no client information in it: internal procedures, training material and templates the firm wrote from scratch. Read our guides for law firms and AI data licensing and accounting firms and IRC 7216, and have your state bar ethics hotline or counsel confirm scope before you talk to any buyer.
Handshake refer a company: the $10K bonus
Handshake pays people who introduce companies to the program. Its referral page reads “Refer a company, get $10K” and sets out four steps (source: Handshake AI, refer a company):
- You refer a company.
- Handshake's team reaches out within 1 to 2 days.
- It scopes the company's tools and agrees terms.
- The $10K bonus is paid when the company's deal closes.
The referred company has to meet the same bar: 20+ full-time employees and 3+ years in operation. The form asks for your details, the contact's name and email, and the company's name, industry, size, years in operation, country and website. The page states no cap and links to Handshake AI's general terms of service rather than referral-specific terms (source: Handshake AI, refer a company).
Compared with other programs, $10K is a flat, modest amount, paid at close rather than after a revenue milestone. micro1, by contrast, advertises up to $50,000 per company (source: micro1, company referral). If you are an accountant, lawyer or advisor, the professional rules on referral fees apply before any of this. Our AI data referral programs comparison covers both.
Licensing company data to Handshake AI: what to get in writing
Handshake publishes its eligibility, advertised range and data handling, but its pages list payment terms and the timeline to payment only as FAQ questions, with no answers in the page content we checked, and say nothing about exclusivity (source: Handshake AI, data partnerships). Ask for each of these in the written offer:
- Price and payment schedule. The total, what triggers each payment, and the dates.
- Exact scope. Which systems, which date ranges, and which teams or locations.
- Exclusions. What never leaves your systems (payroll details, customer addresses, personnel records, anything under an NDA), named in the contract.
- Exclusivity and term. Whether you can license the same records to another buyer, and for how long.
- No identification. Handshake's promise that partner companies are never identified, written into the contract with a remedy if it is broken.
- Compliance allocation. Since you carry responsibility for the legality of the transfer, what representations you make and what help Handshake gives on de-identification.
- Deletion and audit. What happens to the copy at the end of the term and how you can confirm it.
- Disputes. How disagreements over acceptance or payment are resolved.
The strongest position is more than one written offer. Buyers price the same records differently, and the terms vary as much as the price. Getting competing offers and negotiating them is the work a sell-side advisor does.

How Regulr is paid, and how we write these pages
Regulr is a sell-side advisor. When a business we introduce signs a license, we may be paid a fee by the buyer or through a program's referral terms. We list every program we can verify whether or not it pays us, order is never set by fees, and every figure is the company's own advertised term with a link to where it says so. Regulr has not closed a data deal yet, so nothing here describes our results.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Handshake AI data partnership program legit?
Handshake is an established company: a careers network founded in 2014 whose AI training business reached a gross run rate of nearly $1 billion in April 2026. The data partnership program is published on Handshake's own site at joinhandshake.com/ai/data-partnerships. If someone contacts you about it on LinkedIn or by email, start from that page rather than a link in the message, and rely only on a written offer that states price, scope, exclusivity and payment terms.
How much does Handshake AI pay for company data?
Handshake says its partnerships range from $100K to $4M+ depending on the data shared. Its estimator example for a 100-employee US company with 10 years of history shows $383,083 to $896,969, and Handshake labels that an indicative estimate, not an offer. Actual pay depends on your data sources, volume and quality, due diligence, and the license terms you agree.
Who qualifies for Handshake AI data partnerships?
Handshake says it is looking for companies with 20+ full-time employees and 3+ years in operation. Its estimator asks for your country, with options for the USA, Canada, Europe and other. It does not name or exclude any industry on its program pages.
Does Handshake AI tell the AI labs which company the data came from?
Handshake says partner companies are never identified. It says the data is de-identified and goes to frontier AI labs for training and evaluation under contractual confidentiality, with access limited to authorized teams. Put the no-identification promise in your contract, including what happens if a lab could work out the source from the content.
Who is responsible if licensing my data to Handshake breaks a law or contract?
You are, under Handshake's own terms. Its page says data partners remain responsible for ensuring that their transfer to Handshake AI complies with applicable legal requirements. That makes your own review of privacy notices, customer contracts, NDAs and professional rules essential before anything is shared.
How does Handshake's refer a company $10K bonus work?
Handshake's referral page says you refer a company, its team reaches out within 1 to 2 days, scopes the company's tools and agrees terms, and your $10K bonus is paid when the deal closes. The referred company needs 20+ full-time employees and 3+ years in operation. The page states no cap and links to Handshake AI's general terms rather than referral-specific terms.
Can a trades or home services company license data to Handshake AI?
Handshake lists ServiceTitan, QuickBooks and Paychex among the sources it buys, which are systems many trades, home services and other operating businesses run on. Any company that meets the 20+ full-time employee and 3+ year bar can apply. Customer names, addresses and payroll details need to be excluded or de-identified, and you should agree in writing on what stays out.
How long does Handshake AI take to pay for company data?
Handshake does not publish a payment timeline. Its page lists payment terms and the time from submission to payment as FAQ questions, but no answers appeared in the page content we checked. Ask for the payment schedule and what triggers each payment in the written offer.
